The Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology Foundation is applying for funding to bring to life the museum’s largest exhibition project ever—the story of modern Sweden’s rise and the role of technology and trade in that development. It is a story that inspires, a story that needs to be told in a new way for a new era, and one that is missing from the public discourse today. A kind of critical springboard into the future.
The exhibition is set to open in April 2026 and will conclude the museum’s 100th-anniversary celebration, which began in December 2023. The museum has drawn on new research about Sweden, with the ambition of giving young people in particular—but also older generations—the opportunity to think in new ways during these dystopian times and to become curious about how they themselves can help shape their own future based on the remarkable journey this country has undertaken over the past 150 years.
The story of modern Sweden’s emergence is, in many ways, a story of openness to the world. How dependent Sweden is on its surroundings. How we have drawn ideas, knowledge, labor, and skills from abroad, where trade has played a central role. It is an important message at a time when the world seems to be closing in on itself. It is an inclusive story that everyone can be a part of and contribute to, even as we continue to shape Sweden’s future.
For Sweden’s small and open economy, trade with other countries plays a fundamental role. This crucial perspective is often missing from the narrative of technological development. Here, the Torsten Söderberg Foundation can play a decisive role.
