Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss (1928–2022) was one of the foremost set and costume designers of our time, who received widespread recognition both nationally and internationally throughout her career. She worked regularly with Ingmar Bergman, Fritz Kortner, and Peter Brook, among others. Together with her partner Peter Weiss, she created a large number of film and theater productions and was part of the development of modern theater in Europe during the 1960s and 70s.
The project will involve organizing the extensive legacy of Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss. The material currently located in Simrishamn consists of personal letters, as well as sketches, texts, sculptures, and ceramics. Organizing the legacy of Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss is important for highlighting one of Sweden’s most significant performing artists, her personal archive, and her artistic achievements. By making the archive accessible, it can inspire current and future generations of researchers and professional performing artists.
In addition to the Torsten Söderberg Foundation’s role in organizing the archive, plans are also underway for an exhibition and a scholarship in Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss’s name for residencies and work with the collections.
