During my work as editor for Ninni Trossholmen's book "Partille herrgård och dess ägare" 2023, I came into contact with several people in the Schmidt family. Among other things, I got access to almost 200 letters from the family, from the 1830s onwards. The brothers Herrmann and Ewald Schmidt immigrated from Altenburg (then Duchy of Saxony) to Partille in 1835, and acquired, among other things, Partille Manor. The brothers became influential in Partille in agriculture and forestry, horticulture and some industry. Herrman Schmidt was also an important person in municipal and ecclesiastical contexts, and for a time also a member of the second chamber of the Riksdag.
Despite the Schmidt brothers' importance for Partille, knowledge about them is limited. We do not know what prompted them to establish themselves in Partille, nor much about their background or where their fortune came from. 35 of the letters were written during the 1830s and 40s, partly between the brothers themselves and partly in correspondence with relatives in Altenburg. These letters comprise around 90 pages of text. The text is extremely difficult to interpret, but after the letters have now been transcribed into readable German by Dr. Nora Dörnbrack at the University of Oslo, it is clear that the material is very interesting for illuminating Partille's history and development during this time. The intention is to edit and translate the material in the next phase of the project and to make it available for research and also publication in an appropriate form.
