The Regal Ship Vasa is one of Sweden's most famous cultural heritages and attracts around 1.5 million visitors every year. However, the ship is under threat, after more than 60 years in the same support cradle, the hull is in danger of giving way under its own weight. To secure its future, the Vasa Museum is running a major project called Stötta Vasa, where a new, customized steel structure will replace the current support. But to succeed, more than technical expertise is needed. As with the salvage in 1961, broad public involvement and an understanding of the ship's unique situation are required. That's why the Vasa Museum, in collaboration with the Promenade app, the Royal Institute of Technology and Musik på Slottet, wants to create the Vasa Promenade: an interactive audio walk that takes the story out into the environments where Vasa's history took place: Stockholm's beaches, harbors and waters.
Using narration, sound design, music and research-based content, visitors will be able to follow Vasa's journey from the maiden voyage to today's conservation work. The walk will be a way to arouse curiosity and understanding of the challenges facing the ship, while conveying current research in an accessible way.
With support from the Torsten Söderberg Foundation, this unique story can be made available to a wide audience in both Swedish and English, thereby contributing to the long-term work of securing the future of the Vasa.
