Publication of the 1806 Library of the Academy of Fine Arts

Thanks to generous grants from the Söderberg Foundations in 2001 and 2007, the internationally important art and architecture library at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts was preserved and housed in the room furnished by member Åke Axelsson. The collection has a unique core of study and teaching material from the 18th and early 19th centuries, and the 1806 library contains around 1200 books of considerable value.

An important cataloging project for the collection is currently being completed, made possible by support from the Torsten Söderberg Foundation. As this cataloging will then be published, it will enhance our country’s reputation in international research—specifically in cultural history and its various branches, including art history, intellectual history, and book history—as well as among libraries, antiquarian bookshops, and auction houses worldwide. The publication would offer an overview of a representative selection of the most important older art and architecture literature that contemporary databases can never provide. The printed volume, approximately 600 pages long, will be illustrated with beautiful photographs and will begin with a brief text on the history of the Academy and the collection.
