Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize 2009 to Finnish designer Harri Koskinen

The Röhsska Museum's Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize Committee, with funding from the Torsten and Ragnar Söderberg Foundations, decided to award the 2008 prize of one million Swedish kronor to the Finnish designer Harri Koskinen.

The award committee's motivation

Harri Koskinen is one of the designers who is now shining brightest in the work of carrying on the Nordic design tradition. His large and broad production has a unique, austere and consistently implemented design language with clear Nordic roots in the requirements of good function, simplicity of form and choice of materials, which together create lasting value. While collaborating with great success with design-intensive companies in different parts of the world, he is actively involved in the renewal of his home country's design industry.

The prize was awarded in connection with a ceremony at the University of Gothenburg, Vasaparken, on November 4.

Harri Koskinen

Designer Harri Koskinen (born 1970) studied at the Lahti Design Institute and the Helsinki University of Art and Design. In 1998 he founded his studio Friends of Industry, which offers product and conceptual design as well as exhibition architecture. Harri Koskinen's designs are characterized by functionality and austere aesthetics. Koskinen is now one of the best-known young designers in the world. He has won several awards over the years. The VAKIO series, which Koskinen designed for ISSEY MIYAKE.

Despite his international career and constant travel, Koskinen has not forgotten his roots in the Finnish countryside. He was born in the small municipality of Karstula in central Finland.
