Fairness diplomacy in the spirit of Pufendorf

On March 22, 2017, Professor Karin Aggestam gave the inaugural lecture "Diplomacy of Justice in a Turbulent World" as the new holder of the Pufendorf Professorship at Lund University. Aggestam is the first political scientist and the first woman to be awarded the chair.

For most of his academic career, Aggestam has devoted himself to research in the fields of diplomacy, peace and conflict resolution, thus working in the spirit of Pufendorf.

As holder of the Pufendorf Chair, Aggestam will build an interdisciplinary research group around the concept of fair diplomacy and consolidate an international research environment. She also hopes to pave the way for an international master's program in diplomacy.

About the Pufendorf Professorship
In 2002, the Torsten Söderberg Foundation and the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation donated SEK 20 million for a professorship in memory of Samuel Pufendorf, a German jurist and theologian who was appointed to a professorship when Lund University was founded in 1666. Pufendorf was a pioneer of modern humanism and international law and believed that the natural state of man was peace. The professorship is intended to promote research at Lund University, primarily in the fields of law, economics and political philosophy, and is held for a maximum period of four years.

Previous holders: Aleksander Peczenik, Kjell Åke Modéer, Håkan Hydén, Gregor Noll.
