January 28, 2026Language is wealth. These words open the anniversary edition of the Swedish Academy's dictionary, which was compiled with support from the Torsten Söderberg Foundation.
The Swedish Academy's dictionary (SAOL) covers contemporary Swedish vocabulary as used in modern texts and preserves, develops, and makes available the Swedish language. The dictionary serves as a map that helps us navigate the common language and is an important practical tool for anyone who works with text.
In order to capture contemporary linguistic reality, especially at a time when language use is changing rapidly, the Department of Swedish, Multilingualism and Language Technology at the University of Gothenburg has based the new edition on various types of written texts in everyday language.
The anniversary edition captures a more open attitude toward loanwords and how they are adapted to Swedish usage. Since the last edition, approximately 2,800 new words have been added and the comments on style and usage have been updated. Many of the new entries reflect the times we live in, for example, " " (to be in a hurry), "sträcktitta" (to watch TV), "hantverksöl" (craft beer), and "övertänka" (to overthink). Other words have been removed.
In addition to the printed version, the anniversary edition of the Swedish Academy's dictionary is also available digitally via the SAOL app and the svenska.se website.
