Refined rooms

The purpose of the thesis "Refined spaces, gas stations and precision culture in Sweden 1926-1956" is to investigate an architectural design language based on the conditions of the gasoline trade in the 20th century. A highly distinctive visual culture emerged when petrol companies began to compete more and more fiercely in the 1920s to attract customers to one and the same product - they sold more or less the same fuel. Motorists were predominantly male, giving rise to a distinctly masculine attitude to the business. The study will therefore incorporate a gender perspective. As the appearance and function of petrol stations have been continuously adapted to prevailing conditions, few individual buildings have been preserved in their original state. Scattered in different parts of Sweden, however, there are gas stations that can be studied on site, and an essential purpose of my project has been to document and analyze them in detail.
