The grant covers funds for the digitization of Carl Christoffer Gjörwell's letter collection "Familjebrev", stored at the Royal Library. Librarian and publisher Carl Christoffer Gjörwell, known for his activities in the Swedish 18th-century magazine and book industry, amassed during his life one of the largest private collections of letters still remaining from this period. Despite the existence of this rich material, the existing research on Gjörwell is fragmentary, especially regarding private aspects of his life. This may be considered strange given that Gjörwell's private collection of letters has been considered to provide a very close picture of the life of the bourgeoisie at this time, while Gjörwell has become known to have been an archetype in his private life for the cult of friendship and the emotional relationship with nature that characterized the 18th century. A dissertation project in history conducted at Umeå University examines precisely these aspects of Gjörwell's life and the grant concerns the reproduction and digitization of the source material that forms the basis of the study. The purpose of digitization is to facilitate the processing of this large, fragile and sometimes difficult to read material, as well as protect it from wear and increase accessibility for other researchers.
